Henry Scofield, born in Chicago on March 3, 1918, received his B.S. (1942) and D.D.S. (1945) from Loyola University (Chicago). He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to his retirement in 1972 with the rank of Captain. He was Chairman of the Department of Oral Pathology at the National Naval Center in Bethesda (1957-63), Chief of the Department of Oral Pathology at AFIP (1963--66), and Chairman of Oral Pathology at the National Naval Medical Center (1966-72). In 1972 he became Associate Professor of Oral Pathology at Georgetown University School of Dentistry, and Professor and Chairman in 1976. He was also Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology at George Washington School of Medicine (1963-66) and Visiting Lecturer at Howard University School of Dentistry, Lecturer in Pathology at the University of Maryland's dental school and member of the Lombardi Cancer Research Center at Georgetown University.

Hank was Secretary-Treasurer of the American Board of Oral Pathology (1975--80) and its President in 1972 and 1980. During his tenure, a self-assessment examination was developed in response to a concern regarding recertification examinations for diplomates of all specialty boards. When such reexamination failed to develop, interest lapsed. He was representative to the American Registry of Pathology, its Secretary (1978-79) and Vice President (1979-80). He received the U.S. Navy Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Republic of Viet Nan Presidential Unit Citation and the Air Forces Outstanding Unit Award. In 1983, Hank received the honorary Sc. D. degree from Georgetown University.
