About Oral Pathology Biopsy Services
A biopsy is a two part process. Step one: the surgeon or general dentist removes a sample of the suspicious tissue (bone or soft tissue or teeth) from the patient. Step two: a pathologist processes the tissue to create a microscopic slide, from which is made the definitive diagnosis.
Oral pathology biopsy services provide microscopic (histopathologic) diagnoses for tissue samples sent to them from general dentists, dental specialists (especially oral surgeons, endodontists and periodontists), or physicians (especially otolaryngologists). The oral pathology laboratory in the U.S. typically sends "biopsy kits" to any doctor who calls them to request the kits. These kits have all the necessary containers, preservative fluids (10% buffered formalin), paperwork and return packaging (U.S. mail, FedEx, etc). With a kit in hand, the dentist/surgeon places the tissue sample into the preserving liquid immediately after removal from the patient, and mails or FedExs the sample to the lab the same day. The labs know that the patient will return to the surgeon for a follow-up visit one week from the date of surgery and so their goal is to have a written diagnostic report in the hands of the surgeon by that time. The report can be mailed, faxed, emailed, or any combination thereof. Moreover, most labs will call the contributing surgeon if it is a very serious diagnosis, such as cancer.
Virtually all oral pathology biopsy services receive specimens from outside their local state or province. The most wide-spread or extensive labs in the U.S. receive specimens from surgeons in more than 40 states. Dentists and surgeons usually send tissue samples to pathologists with whom they are familiar, either by reputation or by the fact that they were taught by the pathologist during their professional education. The latter is a significant point, since all but a handful of oral pathology labs are operated by dental school faculty.
In the U.S. the average number of specimens received by an oral pathology laboratory is about 3,000 per year, with the largest lab receiving more than 16,000 per year. At least 2,000 specimens per year are required for those institutions which operate an oral pathology training program. The size of the services in other countries varies greatly with the country.
Several oral pathology labs provide certain clinical lab procedures, such as autoclave testing and microbe identification through culture or PCR techniques.
