About
this Site
This web page is sponsored by the Maxillofacial Center for Education &
Research, a small, private nonprofit U.S. research center based in Morgantown,
West Virginia, USA. The MFCenter maintains the site for easy access to
other oral pathology and oral medicine sites and services. Information
on the site is gleaned from interested parties worldwide, and at least
one oral pathologist from each continent, excluding Antarctica, has agreed
to be a special International Advisor for the site (see listing of International
Advisors). Several non-pathologists have also agreed to provide pathology-related
information from other specialties (see listing of International Advisors).
Informational material is updated and maintained by a US oral pathologist,
Dr. J. E. Bouquot, Director of Research for the MFCenter. This site was
first opened in November, 2000 and as of February, 2004 was averaging
830,000 hits and 70,000 visitors per year.

Definition
of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology
(Oral Pathology, Oral Path.)
Oral
pathology is the specialty of dentistry and pathology which deals with
the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral
and maxillofacial regions. It is a science that investigates the causes,
processes and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology
includes research, diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic,
microscopic, biochemical or other examinations, and management of
patients. In the United States oral pathology is one of nine specialties
officially recognized by the American Dental Association and the federal
government, and because of this it has its own national certifying board,
the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology. Oral pathologists
operate biopsy services for dental and medical professionals, and many
also operate clinical diagnosis and management clinics (clinical oral
pathology) as well as radiograph consultation services. Several national
organizations of oral pathologists exist. In the U.S. the main national
association is the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology,
and the above definition is that of the AAOMP and has also been adopted
by the American Dental Association.

Definition
of Oral Medicine
(Stomatology)
Oral Medicine is the specialty
of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of medically compromised
patients and with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of medically
related disorders or conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.
Oral Medicine specialists are concerned with the non-surgical medical
aspects of dentistry. These specialists are involved in the primary diagnosis
and treatment of oral diseases that do not respond to conventional dental
or maxillofacial surgical procedures. (Note: This definition is derived
from the American Academy of Oral Medicine)
Typically, oral medicine specialists may deal with:
- Chronic orofacial disorders and complications
resulting from systemic diseases, aging, immunosuppression and medical
therapies
- Salivary gland and functional disorders
of the head and neck region
- Chemo-sensory and neurological impairment
of the oral and maxillofacial complex
